Climate Change and Senior Citizens

In the cover story of their most recent newsletter, the AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) informed their millions of members that Climate Change “is already impacting the health, wealth, safety and daily lives” of older Americans (as well as their children and grandchildren).

The severe weather that is being fueled by the greenhouse gases from our burning fossil fuels threatens everyone, everywhere. Wildfires, droughts, floods, tornados, hurricanes, microbursts, rising sea levels, extreme heat & rainfall are impacting health, livability and property values.

AARP also warns that traditionally “safe” retirement investments in oil, gas, and other fossil-fuel industries are now at-risk of devaluation, while ESG (Environmental, Social, & Governance) investments – especially in clean energy – are providing new opportunities for long-term financial security and growth.

It’s heartening to see everyone waking up to the reality of our climate crisis and the threat to people of all ages – and to advocating actions that we can all take to make a difference.
