Solar Saves the Day in Florida

Hurricane Ian devastated many parts of Florida this past month.

But solar saved the day for one solar-powered community just north of Fort Myers. Babcock Ranch is an innovative community north of Fort Myers where homes are built to withstand the worst that Mother Nature can throw at them without being flooded out or losing electricity, water or the internet.

While surrounding communities were devastated by the Hurricane, Babcock’s 5,000 residents were barely inconvenienced when their 650,000 photovoltaic panels on 870 acres of land owned by the development and operated by Florida Power & Light powered the whole community through the storm.

The solar array powers the whole community and then some. It can supply 30,000 homes, with the excess going back into the grid to be used to power surrounding communities.
