Top Ten Companies Going Solar

solar energy

The Solar Energy Industries Association released this year’s top 10 companies who are “going solar” in a huge way:

Recognize any of them? Target, Walmart, Prologis, Apple, Costco, Kohl’s, Ikea, Macy’s, General Growth Properties, & Hartz Mountain…

While they’re getting some “good press” and “green creds” – the reality is that they figured out that solar can save them a tremendous amount of money.

As Mike Duke of Walmart says: “The math adds up pretty quickly…less energy we have to buy… means less waste and more savings”.

Give us a call or email, and we’ll help you figure out how you can save with solar, too.

The Voice of Hope in the Renewable Field

department-of-energy-deployment

There is more speculation, more rumors, more nervous people in the renewable energy field right now then ever before in our history. It is refreshing this week to hear of some positive forward thinking in the midst of all the angst. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy boldly announced it’s commitment for it’s SunShot Inititive to cut the cost of solar-generated electricity by 50% between 2020 and 2030. This is a new target continuing SunShot Initiative’s progress in helping the solar industry reach more than 90% of the initiative’s established 2020 goal in just five years. This includes brand new funding opps that will push the cost of solar even further down. Three cheers for the Department of Energy!

Saving the World = 100 Gigafactories

before-the-flood-lead-1580x530

Forbes recently did an article on the movie “Before the Flood”, where the UN “Messenger of Peace” – actor Leonardo DiCaprio – documents the realities of Climate Change, and provides insights into the solutions.

One of most fascinating quotes: To transition the world to 100% renewable energy will take 100 Gigafactories like the one that Tesla is building in Nevada.

While it’s no small feat to build a ~15 million square foot Gigafactory, and building 100 is beyond the reach of any one company – it is tremendously hopeful that there IS an achievable path to get humanity through the ever-deepening depths of climate disruption.

Best Time To Be Alive

you-and-the-universe

There were two incredibly inspiring articles on the web this week:

The first, a gift from our neighbors to the north, speaks for itself:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/inspired-life/wp/2016/10/17/leave-it-to-canada-to-remind-america-that-its-still-a-great-country/

The other article (below) made me think about how the evolution of clean
energy policy, technology, financing, and economies of scale are making
clean energy affordable for everyone.

Take the Oakwood Friend’s School. The non-profit boarding school always wanted solar, but had 11 different electric meters for their 18
mostly-shaded buildings – and couldn’t afford it.

Today, solar is producing 100% of their annual 700,000 kilowatt hours of
electricity. The system is sited in a fallow field at the edge of their property, and is “remote metered”. EarthKind Energy identified and maneuvered through the new energy policies and grant incentives, put together leading cost-effective technologies, secured a pass-along ofincentives from a tax equity investor, and coordinated the myriad details
of the installation and utility interconnection — with ZERO ($-0-) dollars out-of-pocket from Oakwood.

Now, the school will save more than $1.5 Million over the next 25 years -and they are using the solar system as an integral part of their  curriculum.

The article also reminded me of my wife – who is alive today thanks to incredible medical advances over the last decade that provided her with a  Live Liver Transplant – where she received 1/2 of a live liver, and both  her portion, and the original, grew back to full size. “Two for one”.

Now…. “imagine a student who grows an artificial pancreas right in front  of the president-an idea that eventually eliminates waiting lists for lifesaving organs… imagine the girls who discover a new fuel based on only sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide… the teenager who makes voting and civic activism as addictive as scrolling through your Twitter feed… the boy from Idaho who grows potatoes from a plot of soil brought back from our colony on Mars…”

It is, indeed, “the best time to be alive”.

Chile Has Cheapest Solar Energy Prices in the World!

chili-solar-power

Chile has more sun than the US – but, the trends is clear: Solar power came in at 2.91 cents per kwh at a Chilean energy auction this month. That’s the lowest price on record for electricity from sunshine, surpassing a deal in Dubai in May. It’s almost half the price of coal power sold in the same event. It’s the cheapest to date for any kind of renewable energy, and it’s one of the lowest rates ever for any kind of electricity, anywhere.

Here comes the sun! Chile’s sun power

North East States Prioritize Renewable Energy

US_Northeastern_states

This past week New York’s PSA (Public Service Commission) passed the Governor’s mandate for New York to go to 50% renewables by 2030.  Massachusetts approved  offshore wind for 1,600 MW of power.     Last year Vermont  approved a Clean Energy Standard of 75 percent by 2032.  One of the more controversial sections of New York’s approval is the inclusion of nuclear power.   New York,  unlike other major state players continues to subsidize nuclear power.  This could be challenged legally in the near future. Read more about this in Renewable Energy World.

Guide Book for Renewable Energy Jobs

E2 (Environmental Entrepreneurs) has created a guide for getting into the filed of renewable energy.  Many young people are graduating from with a firm belief that they need to create a sustainable world to live in.  Therefore it is logical for graduates to be attracted to the renewable energy field which will help co-create a sustainable world.  Read more about opportunities here in E2’s clean jobs guide for grads.

2016 Already a Breakthrough Year For Solar Energy

Solar energy has been growing for years now.  But 2016 could turn out to be one of the biggest yet!  Growth is predicted now at 116% New technologies, new regulations, public opinion, green businesses have led to many new models of solar available.  Community solar and micro-grids, unheard of just a few years ago are gaining significant momentum.   The Hill does a good job of explaining how this is a nationwide phenomena.  Read Here.

Solar Installing – are we loosing quality for quantity?

jorgepanels

Mr. Van Nostrand raises some very good points about a growing concern. It seems to be that when solar was a fairly new technology that installers took their time to really do a good job. However, now that solar is become so competitive and mainstream that we seem to be loosing that personal touch of real quality work. All of us in this field need to be continually mindful of providing quality service to our customers.Read Mr. Van Nostrand’s article here.
